Ever since the Garden of Eden, naughty Eve has been paying the price for convincing Adam to eat the forbidden fruit. It wasn't until the middle ages that this notorious fruit became an apple, illustrating this seminal event for a world of illiterates. Artists chose the shiny, plump, familiar red fruit which I am using to represent the beginning of gender disparity.
I pierce the skin of every day apples with the word “EVIL” via laser etching, hand carving, pins, nails, etc. I photograph them in settings with gender, bible or fairy tale associations. Then the marked apples are made into permanent sculptures in jars of alcohol or they are freeze-dried as a metaphor for how our modern society preserves ancient stereotypes of male and female roles.
